Am trying to determine proper spacer placement for rear wheel chain drive 92 Sportster Hugger.?
Two are larger, one (with a line on it) is shorter. Do the large ones go on each side of the hub, with the short one on the outside to the right? They just won't seem to fit when I try putting it back together. Thanks, Steve
Call be dumb, but what is "dfgdfg" supposed to stand for? An insult implying Steve is an idiot? Or are the spacers lettered with a d, f and g? If the former, keep your stupid answers to yourself. If the latter, explain further.
Steve, I'm not familiar with the rear hub on your bike, but you might take a look to see if one spacer is supposed to slip inside of a rubber lipped dust seal just outside of the wheel bearing in the wheel itself. If so, see if one of the spacers has a smooth, shiny strip going around it. If so, that one should fit in that spot, making sure the smooth area lines up with the seal's lip. A rough area will chew up the seal.
I've found that on many bikes, you need to spread the swingarm apart slightly to get the wheel and spacers in place. If your hands are reasonabaly strong, you can usually spread it enough by hand to get the job done.
If you're concerned afterwards about the proper spacing, take a long string, tie to the valve stemand first heading out to the left, wrap it around the outside of the tire and over to the right side, going around the back side of the tire at the rear of the bike. With the front wheel aimed straight forward, get in front of the front wheel and pulling the string taut, move it right or left until it just barely touched the edge of the front side of the tire. When it does, the string should line up with the front wheel. Keep in mind that since the rear wheel is wider than the front, when both wheels are aligned, the string will be a small but equal distance away from the front and rear sides of the front wheel. Flip the string around and do the same on the other side of the bike. Both sides should be even. In the good old days, I used this method to align the rear wheel with the front on chain drive bikes because the alignment marks on the swing arm weren't always accurate. On my 750 Honda, perfet alignment was one half mark off on one side compared to the other. Taking that into consideration when adjusting the chain got rid of the terrible neck and shoulder pains I'd get when riding long distances and fighting the steering.
