Is this a good idea for a Christmas present for my boyfriend?
I know it's 2 months away but I want to start thinking about it. My boyfriend & I are 16 and have been dating for eleven months, one year on December 3. Last year for Christmas I got him a Green Day shirt (that he still wears) and made him a CD. For his birthday that just went by I got him a subscription to a magazine (NASCAR Illustrated), an iTunes card and made him a CD.
He likes Green Day, NASCAR (especially Jeff Gordon) and Zombies. Anyway I was thinking that for Christmas this year I would make him a no sew fleece blanket (I know how to make these, they're the ones with the knots on the sides), buy him a sweatshirt and give him a gift card to Game Stop inside of a little stocking with gum. Is this a good idea?
Is the BLANKET a good idea or will he think it's lame? He typically sleeps with like 5-6 blankets in the winter and we like to cuddle under a blanket when we watch TV so I thought making the blanket would be cute but what do you think?
Thanks in advance!!
Green Day, NASCAR, and zombies: this is proof that you should never form stereotypes of people. I'd wager that your boyfriend, while happy to be at the race, isn't too thrilled with the music the other NASCAR fans play in the parking lot. Probably not a lot of punk-style music going on there.
On to the topic at hand, your boyfriend should be thrilled with a blanket made by you. This is much different than just any mass-produced blanket, because he will realize that you put a lot of effort and love into its creation—much more than if you had just bought one.
Further, you can make it even more special by putting your card on the wrapped blanket. In the card, you could come up with a clever bit of writing—poetry if you're able to manage it, though that's not necessary—that relates your blanket to the good times you've shared cuddled under blankets at the television. Don't forget to mention in the card that you made it yourself. If he reads the card first, then once he opens the blanket he will understand immediately, which will add to the thrill.
Bear in mind that it's true that typical 16-year-old boys probably don't expect blankets to be their favorite gift at Christmas. I know that when I was 16, I was more interested in entertainment related gifts (video games, electronics, CDs) than textiles.
BUT, this was what I thought would be exciting BEFORE Christmas. Now, that Christmas was almost exactly half-my-life ago (I'm 32 now), and I don't remember any of the games or albums I received that year. What I do remember are the gifts my then girlfriend gave me: a specially-ordered shirt, her made-from-scratch cookies, and (yes) a woven blanket. Of course, she hadn't made the blanket, but it actually had some relevance to our relationship—much as your planned blanket does for yours.
The point is, most guys at 16 don't EXPECT to be taken in by sentimental gestures, but whether they expect it to or not, sentiment almost always wins out over the easy pleasures of games or gadgets. Just make sure you do what you can to show that it is special and from your heart, and I assure you he'll still have your blanket when he is my age!
Great idea. Good luck with the weaving!
A little thing called boredom!
