I received a phone call from a debt collector stating that I owe $2000 on an old Washington Mutual credit card. I informed them that I do not owe anything and that the card was paid off a long time ago. The woman proceeded to tell me that she was looking at my credit report and the last payment was made in 2007. I told her I would research it and get back to her. I transferred the entire balance of this card to my Citicard in January of 2008 and was able to find the email from Citicard confirming the transaction. This was the same time that Washington Mutual was merging with Chase. This account is now with it's 3rd collection agency. First, I want to know if I will get sued for this. Second, I want to know how to clear this up and have it taken off of my credit report?? I live in DE and the current debt collector is Creditors Interchange. Thanks.
Just run your yearly credit reports. For online, go to annualcreditreport.com, by mail, call Trans Union toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. If it shows a zero balance, call the bank and tell them you want a confirmation that the account is paid in full, if they refuse to confirm, tell them you want to speak to a manager.
