A U-shaped tube is partially filled with equal volumes of water and mercury. If any liquid fills a length l = 15.0 cm-long section of the Tube, what shall be the difference h (in cm) in the upper levels of the land?
The weight of all the water above the mercury-water interface level on the Water side is equal to the weight of the mercury above the level on the other side. Or 15 cm of water = (15 - h) cm of Hg, by weight. Let r = (density of Hg) / (density of water), which is the specific weight of mercury - have a look.
