Why are American Soldiers worldwide carrying foreign (Beretta) sidearms?
are Colts and Smith and Wesson not good enough anymore ?
Should the USA government not buy American ? Especially on multi million dollar contracts ? What other GI gear is foreign made ?

They are built in the USA at several plants, so your plan would throw several thousand people out of work.
It was chosen as a compromise, because the US pulled out of the NATO standard round for individual weapons-AFTER going to great lengths to practically bully the members to adopt it.
There is no "foreign made" gear. There are foreign DESIGNS built under license-and as someone who's butt depending on my stuff working, I'll take ANYTHING from ANYONE if it works better than the US equivalent.
EDIT: You forget the subcontractors who supply raw materials, logistical support AND construct subassemblies. THAT runs to several thousand workers.
